The SdO

Foundation, legal status and registered office
The Societat d'Onomàstica was founded in 1980 by Dr. Enric Moreu-Rey and some university professors and local scholars, mostly hailing from Camp de Tarragona. It acquired legal status on October 2nd, 1980, when it was registered under Section 1 of the Registro Provincial de Asociaciones de Barcelona [Barcelona’s Provincial Register of Associations], with Registration No. 4836. The society’s registered office can be found on Carrer de la Diputació, 276, Principal, 08009, Barcelona.
In 2005 the Societat d’Onomàstica (SdO) signed a Collaboration Agreement (No. 990) with the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya (ICC) for the promotion of Onomastics. The purpose of this collaboration was to increase support; increase the number of publications; and to raise awareness of the activities and studies linked to the world of Onomastics, and in particular to promote knowledge of Toponymy. This agreement has enabled the Society to adapt modern and productive practices that allow greater distribution, with the knowledge and advice of the Comissió de Toponímia [Toponymy Commission].

Objective
The Society’s main objectives include the promotion of its inventory; the study and protection of Proper names (Onomastics), Personal names (Anthroponymy) and Place names (Toponymy); coordination of the activities carried out by researchers; publication of an internal newsletter and specialised monographs; the provision of technical advice to individuals and groups; the organisation of seminars and conferences related to these matters; and the organisation of its inventory of literature and documentation.

Activities
At present, the Society carries out the following activities:
a)  Organises general seminars on Onomastics,
b)  Publishes the Internal Newsletter and,
c)  Publishes Onomastic monographs by municipality, in association with the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya

The scope of the Society’s work focuses on the Catalan language, along with its dialects, both in their present forms, as well as in their earlier stages.
