Onomastics is the study of Proper names in general, including Personal names (Anthroponymy) and Geographical names (Toponymy).
 
It was born from the historical linguistics of the mid-nineteenth century and gradually became a discipline in its own right. It is closely related to Human Sciences such as History, Linguistics and Anthropology, amongst others. Many scholars have fostered this discipline with dedication and rigor, and literature on the subject is abundant, especially that related to Toponomastic inventories.
