Josep Mascaró Pasarius was an autodidactic cartographer and archaeologist. He published the general maps of Menorca (1947-51) and Majorca (1952-62) and carried out indispensable archaeological field work. He published the findings of his works in several writings. Some of his more important books include: Els monuments megalítics de l'illa de Menorca (1958), Prehistoria de las Balears (1968), Geografía e historia de Menorca (1979), Prehistòria de Menorca (1980), Corpus de toponimia de Mallorca (six volumes, 1962-67) and Historia de Mallorca (five volumes, 1970-75). He collaborated on both the Onomasticon Cataloniae, by Joan Coromines, and the Gran Enciclopèdia de Mallorca. His work Corpus de toponimia de Menorca - which was awarded the Jaume I prize from the Institut d’Estudis Catalans in 1983 - was published posthumously (two volumes, 2005) by G. Bibiloni.
