Francesc Carreras Candi

(Barcelona, 1862-1937)

Graduating with a Bachelor of Law from Barcelona in 1882, Francesc Carreras Candi was a lawyer, historian and politician. He devoted himself to archaeological studies, investigative documentation and journalistic dissemination, scientific trekking, etc. He was president of the Joventut Conservadora (1890), a councillor for Barcelona council as part of the Lliga Regionalista (1891-1922), and president of the Eixample commission (1918-22). In his role as councillor, he promoted the publication of unpublished documents from the Municipal Archive: Manual de novells ardits and Dietari de l'antic consell barceloní (1892), as well as Rúbriques de Bruniquer (1912-16) in collaboration with Bartomeu Gunyalons. In 1928, he published Les drassanes barcelonines, sos inventaris i restauració. He was also a professor of Catalonian history at the Estudis Universitaris Catalans (1903-05) and the Ateneu Enciclopèdic Popular. In 1898, he joined the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona, of which he became president (1918-31; 1934-37), and contributed to the creation of its bulletin (1901), where he published a number of historical works. He also managed the first issues of the "Butlletí del Centre Excursionista de Catalunya", and was president of that institution (1912). He was consul to the Dominican Republic from 1900, and administrator of the Companyia per a la canalització de l'Ebre from 1924.

The themes of his works were varied and included: Catalan castles and chivalresque life, the Jews, the Inquisition, urban code for good governance in Catalonia, notarial and numismatic works, philology, Iberism and toponyms. His most important work was La ciutat de Barcelona (1916), which was the first chronicle of the city’s urban planning. It was drafted directly from stored records and became an interesting set of published works on Barcelona. It is also one of the volumes of the Geografia General de Catalunya (~1908-18), which he managed. He continued this teamwork with his book El folklore y costumbres de España (1933). He collaborated with various newspapers (La Ilustració Catalana, La Vanguardia, and Las Noticias) and managed the Revista Mercedaria (1918). He worked under the pseudonym Cèsar Cardiran. He also published about 140 articles on philately and founded the Societat Filatèlica Catalana (1901), which he chaired.

Further works include: Pere Joan Ferrer, militar i senyor del Maresme (1892), Lo castell de la Roca del Vallès (1895), Notas históricas de Sarriá (1897), Dietari de la guerra a Cervera (1907), Orígenes de la enfiteusis en Barcelona durante los siglos xi y xii (1909), Narraciones montserratinas (1911), La Via Laietana (1913), La Creu Coberta (1919), Desafiament a Catalunya en el segle xvi, with Siegfried Bosch (1936), and posthumously, Cataluña ilustrada  (1940) and La navegación en el río Ebro (1940), the latter in collaboration with A.
